The Hebrews were encamped at Mount Sinai at Taftan Volcano during the Exodus. Moses went up the mountain to worship. He delayed coming down. At this time Moses’ brother….
Aaron asked the Hebrews to remove their jewelry. He molded a calf of gold from the gold and the Hebrews began to dance around it. Moses was angered when he returned and saw the calf and the dancing. He took the calf, burnt it in a fire, ground it to powder, mixed the power in water and made the Hebrews drink it. Then Moses said to them:
Let every man put his sword on his side, and go in and out from entrance to entrance throughout the camp, and let every man kill his brother, kill his companion, and every man his neighbour (Bible, Exodus 32:27).
Yadavas killed each other at Prabhasa:
We find a similar event in the story of Krishna. The Yadavas were living at Dwarka. The Yadava youth played a prank on the sages at Dwarka. They dressed up a lad as a woman and tied an iron pestle on his stomach. They brought the lad to the Sages and asked them whether the “girl” would give birth to a boy or a girl? The Sages were infuriated. They pronounced a curse that the same iron pestle will lead to the destruction of their clan. The Yadavas were mortally afraid. They wanted to get rid of the pestle and the curse that it carried. They ground the pestle to powder and dispersed the powder into the sea. They left Dwarka soon thereafter and camped at Prabhasa. Here they drank liquor and a terrible quarrel arose among them. Then:
Son killed father, brother killed brother, nephew killed uncle, grandson killed grandfather, friend killed friend… When their arrows were exhausted and weapons were broken, they started pulling out reeds from the seacoast. This same grass grew out of the powder of the pestle (Bhagwata Purana 11:30:13, 19-21).
Common strands:
We can see many common strands between the two narratives. First, an unruly act by the Prophet’s clan led to the incident. The making of a golden calf and dancing around it calf angered Moses. Dressing up a boy as a woman angered the sages.
Second, a metal object was ground and mixed with water. A gold calf was ground and mixed with water in the Biblical narrative. The Hebrews got infuriated drinking this water. An iron pestle was ground and thrown into the sea in the Hindu narrative. The reeds that grew from this powder became the instrument of killing of the Yadavas.
Third, this powder became the instrument of the killing. The Hebrews drank the water mixed with the powder and killed each other. The Yadavas pulled out reeds that grew out of the powder and killed each other.
Fourth, brothers killed one another in both the narratives.
These parallels suggest that Moses and Krishna were the same persons.
