Adam’s Transgression: Divine Mercy and Eternal Consequences
In the traditional Quranic narrative, Adam forgets God’s prohibition not to eat of the Tree of Eternity. This interpretation overlooks why a benevolent God would forbid mankind to eat of a tree that gives long life. We propose an alternate interpretation: God told Adam to eat of the tree. This was the earlier covenant. Adam initially refrained from eating of the tree due to lethargy. Then God’s “negative order”: “do not eat of the tree” prompted him to eat of it just as children do opposite of what is told. Adam ate, humankind progressed and Adam repented for not having eaten of the tree earlier.
